Activities to inspire

The Activities Program on Palm Island will include more cultural activities that focus on promoting healthy and positive behaviours. The program will target junior secondary students in need of a bit of encouragement to get them to go to school and work hard.

Following the success of the Activities Program in Palm Island, our partner communities in Woorabinda (QLD) and Wurrumiyanga (NT) now also have Activities Programs, which started earlier this year. In Woorabinda the program is managed by Geoff Major, Program Coordinator, and run by volunteers. In Wurrumiyanga we welcomed Tasha Puautjimi to the team as a casual Program Officer. Tasha has been key in building community relationships and coordinating activities between students and community stakeholders such as the Tiwi Bombers and the Red Cross.

Over 120 students from Townsville attended the Cathy Freeman Foundation OzTag and Kathy Tarpaulin Netball Challenge in late June. This event is held annually on the Bwgcolman Day public holiday and has become a significant event on the community calendar. The Cathy Freeman Foundation, Palm Island schools and community work together to welcome visiting schools to Palm Island to take part in a fun day of sporting events and learning about the culture and history of Palm Island.
